A new tracking project!!

We recently received amazing news from the Norwegian Research Council (NRC) that our 'Pressures of Urbanisation on Fish and Fisheries in Norway and South Africa (PUFFINS)' project will receive funding. The project will be a continuation of the urban tracking project BOATS that we have worked on for the past three years, but we will now also track European eel and chimaera during the next phase of restoration of the sea bed surrounding Bergen City in Norway. The PUFFINS project is a collaborative project with partners in South Africa where urban restoration is planned. The partners from South Africa and Norway will share knowledge and provide advice on urban restoration activities to optimize the ecological effect of restoration. In South Africa, the spotted grunter (Pomadasys commersonnii) and smoothhound sharks will be tagged to follow their behaviour during the urban restoration.

Here is a clip of a chimaera that was captured while an ROV company was searching for equipment for us. The chimaera was filmed outside of Bergen at 200 meters depth.

We are very excited about this new project and to collaborate with our partners in South Africa! Keep an eye out for more information and updates, both here on our webpage, and our account @BergenTelemetry on Instagram and Bluesky.
