Meet The Team
Dr. Knut W. Vollset
Research professor
I am a research professor at NORCE LFI, and have been a leader of several large-scale Norwegian Research Council projects in recent years that have similarly involved tagging and tracking the fate of fish around western Norway. I am also a member of the Academy for young researchers, where I help to inspire and maintain an open platform for young researchers.
Dr. Robert Lennox
Research scientist
I am the Scientific Director at Ocean Tracking Network and an associate professor at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, and I also have a part time position as researcher at NORCE LFI. I have a great interest in using telemetry to study animal movement and predation events, with main focus on aquatic species. I lead and I am involved in many different projects, primarily in Canada and Norway, where we use telemetry to study fish behaviour and movement. I am also highly involved in The European Tracking Network, another platform for tracking aquatic animals.
Saron Berhe
PhD Candidate
I finished my Masters in Fisheries Biology and Management at UiB in June 2021, and wrote my thesis on the effect of acoustic tags on the vertical behavior of Atlantic salmon smolts in collaboration with NORCE LFI. I have since worked as a researcher within this group, and with a strong interest in fish behavior, I have spent my time practicing my interest through the use of telemetry to study and track different fish species in Norway. In 2024, I started on a PhD degree with NORCE LFI - and I will spend the next 4 years studying salmonids in the arctic and how increasing climate change affects their fjord ecology and life history.
Cecilie I. Nilsen
PhD Candidate
I am an early career researcher working at NORCE Norwegian Research Centre in Bergen, Norway. I have recently completed my Masters degree at the University of Bergen in Ecology in partnership with NORCE, focusing on studying Atlantic salmon migration using acoustic telemetry. During spring 2022 I will start on my PhD degree, and continue working on the LaKES project. My interests are movement ecology, biotelemetry, integrating animal tracking data into management and policy models to resolve conservation challenges and develop actionable solutions to the biodiversity crisis.
Marius Kambestad
Research scientist
I work on various aspects of freshwater ecology and salmonid conservation, including river restoration, predator-prey dynamics, population monitoring and the effects of human interference such as harvesting, aquaculture and habitat alteration. Methods used in my projects include radio telemetry, electric fishing, snorkeling counts, hydrodynamic modelling and habitat mapping.
Lotte S. Dahlmo
PhD Candidate
I am a PhD candidate working on the LOST project where I study how availability of oxygen in fjords affect the behaviour and movement of spiny dogfish outside of Bergen by using acoustic telemetry. My Master thesis was a collaboration between NORCE LFI and UiB where I studied the effect of hydropower on the behaviour of adult sea trout in lake Vassbygdevatnet in Aurland as a part of the LaKES project. I am especially interested in animal movement and behaviour, and how anthropogenic activities are impacting their behaviour.
Dr. Dylan Shea
Postdoctoral researcher
I am a postdoctoral researcher working at NORCE LFI and NORCE Molecular Ecology with an interest in understanding the dynamics of pathogens (viruses, bacteria, protists) of concern to salmon aquaculture sustainability and wild fish conservation. I am helping to lead the PATHDNA research project, a collaborative effort among aquaculture industry partners and researchers, applying innovative molecular methods to characterize seasonal and aquaculture production-dependent variability in infection risk in Western Norwegian fjord environments
Yngve Landro
Technician
I have various background from different fields, such as carpenter, fishing, firefighting, helicopterflying and more. I work in different groups within LFI NORCE, facilitating the multiple challenges we come across in fieldwork. I have always had a strong passion for fish in general, and find it wery interesting to be part of the acoustic telemetry team in LFI. I love being out in field putting out gear, tagging, and learning more about life under water.
Eirik Straume Normann
Researcher
I am a technician at NORCE LFI and have worked here since 2002. I spent many summers counting the number of returning salmon and trout in Bolstadfjorden by managing the traditional 'sittenot' as a teenager. I am currently mostly involved with salmonids through spawning counts and counting and tagging of smolts, in addition to helping out with deploying telemetry equipment in the fjords and rivers. I also read scales from fish to determine their age, and time spent in freshwater vs marine.

Dr. Tormod Haraldstad
Senior Researcher
I am a senior researcher at NORCE LFI and have been carrying out research concerning the ecology of anadromous and catadromous fish species, including resolving management conflicts regarding their migration past hydropower dams. I have great interest in fish behavior and experience with planning and carrying out fish ecology studies in the field, catching and tagging fish, and refining these techniques in a variety of scenarios. I`m currently positioned in our reginal office in Kristiansand leading an industry project on wind power development effect on smolts behavior using acoustic telemetry and long-term projects in Southern Norway regarding sea survival of Atlantic salmon and sea trout smolts using PIT-telemetry.
Kurt Johansen
Researcher
I am a researcher at NORCE LFI with background in costal ecology from the University of Agder. My interest in fish, and salmonids in particular, started as volunteer work in the local hunting and fishing association and later grew into a career.
The focus of my master thesis was on salmon smolt migration behaviour using acoustic telemetry in a hydropower regulated river in southern Norway. I have also been contributing to projects involving acoustic, radio, satellite and PIT telemetry
Erlend Mjelde Hanssen
PhD Candidate
I am a researcher at NORCE LFI with a Masters in marine biology from UiB. I did my thesis in partnership with NORCE LFI between 2018 and 2020, investigating salmon smolt behaviour and migration using acoustic telemetry. Since 2020, I have been working at LFI with river restoration, population monitoring, telemetry and all things frewshwater ecoogy. I am situated at our regional office in Oslo, but mostly work on a range of projects in the Sunnmøre region in Norway.
Lars Martin 'Laffen' Myhre
Project Coordinator
I finished my masters in marine biology at UiB in 2022, and wrote my thesis on applying eDNA-methods to investigative studies related to alien species. In 2023 I started working for NORCE as a project coordinator, and during 2024 I have been more involved in research related work. I am interested in how human activities affect behavior in aquatic and marine ecosystems, and what measures can be done to limit our effects. So far in BTN I have been field-assisting in the BOATS project, and am excited to become more involved in the group going forward.
